Pupils investigate the insulation properties of various materials, then build and insulate a model home. Using datalogging equipment, they compare whose home heats up the most quickly and therefore who has insulated their home the best. They relate this to conserving energy in their own homes. The model homes are then taken back to school.
• Properties and changes of materials - Compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets.
• Electricity - Recognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.
